LDE(X)6 - bessy meets ermintrude
There are major changes following a radical change in architecture. The UI and core are now completely separate from each other - this breaks compatibility with all plugins and schemes for earlier releases of LDE(X).

Speculative requirements
300 MHz Pentium II or better processor recommended (faster for alpha blending across the entire interface).
For Windows 2000, 9 MB free RAM (LDE needs around 4-12 MB to work, depending on user preferences).
For Windows XP, 14 MB free RAM (LDE needs around 5-24 MB to work, depending on user preferences).
Display resolution of 800x600, 16 bit colour (65536) or better (this is the absolute minimum - 1024x768, 1600x1200 are both usable; 1280x1024 is recommended).
10.1 MB free disk space for installation + 1.6 MB for shell swapper (NTFS; FAT16 demands are unknown).
Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3 recommended) or Windows XP (SP1 recommended) (Windows NT 4.0 may work; Windows 9x/Me are unsupported).
Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes installed (msvcp60.dll at least is vital).
Web browser (HTML documentation).
(Optional) Sound card (for media control plugin(s)).
(Optional) CD-ROM drive(s) for Audio CD playback.

The first stable release of the 6th generation of LDE(X) has now been made available as 6.01. This release is incompatible with all earlier (stable) releases of LDE(X) and there is no upgrade route apart from a fresh installation into a completely new directory (although there is an upgrade route from the earlier beta releases of LDE(X)6). Note that LDE(X)6.x can be used on the same system as earlier LDE(X) releases without issue.
In comparison to LDE(X)5.x, some features and interface implementations have been discontinued. These changes were made to improve the usability and ease of configuration. The plugin and scheme systems were also reworked to make installation and development far simpler than for previous implementations.
The new architecture that underlies LDE(X)6 has been radically overhauled, making it simpler to maintain and capable of supporting much more in the future, including entirely new user interfaces, with great efficiency.
